Today at 5pm we’re showing the oscar nominated movie Milk in Electrical
Engineering L1 at 5pm.
Then at 7.30pm, in place of the Rainbow Ball, we’re heading to the Newport
Bar on Paul St. Formal wear is the dress code for the night- and there’ll be
free food in the Newport. We’ll then be heading to Instinct.
Thank you all for your wonderful support this year for Rainbow Week, which
was the most successful ever seen in UCC.
Stay tuned to www.ucc.ie/lgbt for photos and videos from the week’s
festivities, which were enjoyed by all.

Due to unforseen technical reasons, the location for tonight’s much-anticipated address by Drs. Ann-Louise Gilligan and Katherine Zappone has been moved.
The event will now take place in Kane G2 at the previously advertised time of 7pm. Kane G2 is just a minutes walk from the previous location, and has a much larger capacity.
LGBT Society members will be directing people who arrive at the council rooms to the new location, to ensure that nobody misses out on the talk. Nothing else has changed.
See you there!

UCC LGBT Society would like to announce the finalised details for Rainbow Week 2009, which takes place on the main UCC campus from this Monday 26th January to Friday 29th January.
This year, we’re proud to reveal that we have a total of 16 planned events, between our own events and collaborative events with other societies.
This year’s headline events include an address by the popular Senator David Norris, a man instrumental in the legalisation of homosexuality in Ireland. He will address an open gathering of UCC students, staff, and visitors in Devere Hall in the Students’ Centre at 1.30pm on Monday, and officially open Rainbow Week.
A special visit by Ann-Louise Gilligan and Kathrine Zappone will take place on Wednesday evening at 7pm in the West Wing Council Chambers. They will speak on their ongoing struggle for their marriage to be recognised in Ireland. Visitors are advised to come early to guarantee a seat, as these inspirational speakers draw large crowds.
The UCC Rainbow Ball, the crowning point of the week, will take place on Thursday night in the Imperial Hotel. Tickets, costing €35 and including a full buffet meal, drinks reception, music from the Hot Blooded Animals and Freakscene D.J Jenny Glitt, are still available, and will be on sale at events throughout the week. Further information on the Rainbow Ball is available from the Rainbow Ballsection on the site.
A debate on gay adoption in conjunction with the UCC Philosoph society, as well as a film showing, gaming night, workshops and live music and comedy are all part of the Rainbow Week programme. All students are encouraged to get involved- and all are most welcome.
The full programme of events can now be seen from our Rainbow Week section.

UCC Rainbow Ball
WHEN: 29th January 2009
WHERE: Imperial Hotel, Cork
PRICE: €35 including drinks reception, full meal, band and D.J

We’re pleased to announce that tickets for the UCC Rainbow Ball are now on sale.
The event is taking place in the Imperial Hotel in Cork on Thursday 29th January, and forms the centerpiece of the LGBT Society Rainbow Week celebrations which begin that Monday (the full programme of events, which include a visit by David Norris, a debate on gay adoption, and an address by Katherine Zappone and Ann-Louise Gilligan of KAL case fame on their fight to get their marriage recognised in Ireland, will be announced shortly)
The Rainbow Ball is open to all- straight or gay, black or white, arts or, fresher or postgrad, employed and unemployed. We’re making a special effort this year to encourage LGBT societies from around the country to participate and send delegations, as we want this to be fully representative of Irish colleges.
It takes place in the Imperial Hotel in the centre of town, which is an easy to access location that requires no bus transport. Doors open at 7pm, and will open with a drinks reception. Dinner will be served at 8pm, after which the Hot Blooded Animals will provide music, before D.J Aisling, who you may know from Cork’s finest indie nightclub Freakscene, will take the stage and get everyone on their feet for the rest of the night.
Those not from Cork can avail of accomodation in a local hostel. We’re recommending Brú Hostel, on McCurtain St, which is located just minutes from the Imperial Hotel. Their website is located at www.bruhostel.com . They have reasonable rates and are well worth checking out if you’re considering making the trip.
So when will be selling tickets for this (hopefully glittering) ocassion?
Firstly, they’ll be available at our event this Wednesday night (14th), which is acinema trip- and at all subsequent society events leading up to the Ball.
We’ll also be selling the tickets from 10-2 outside the Boole on Thursday 15th (or inside if the weather is bad).
Tickets will also be available shortly in The Other Place on North Main St.
If you’re unable to make any of these events or miss our stand, drop us an email at lgbt@uccsocieties.ie, let us know you’re interested, and we’ll arrange something.
Looking forward to seeing you there- it’ll be a night to remember.

2009′s first event will be a trip to the Gate Cinema this Wednesday night (14th) to see ‘The Reader’. The film starts at 9.15pm. We’ll be meeting outside the Students’ Centre on campus at 8.45pm and then walking into town to the cinema, although you can just meet us at the cinema if you’d prefer. Looking forward to seeing you there! As ever, all are welcome, members and non-members.
The Gate Cinema’s website introduces the film like this:
THE READER opens in post-WWII Germany when teenager Michael Berg becomes ill and is helped home by Hanna, a stranger twice his age. Michael recovers from scarlet fever and seeks out Hanna to thank her. The two are quickly drawn into a passionate but secretive affair.
