Have you gone rock climbing in the Mardyke yet?
Thought not. Well, if you’ve been itching to place your life in a thin piece of rope, but never had the opportunity to do so- now’s the time!
We’re meeting at 6.45pm outside the Mardyke Arena, where the climbing wall is located.
We’re then heading to Loafer’s bar on Douglas St afterwards to bid farewell to the proprietor and have a few drinks.
We’ll be ending the night in Sinners (Chambers Bar on Washington St). All are most welcome to get involved at any stage of the night.
The rock climbing is suitable for everyone from beginners to experts, so don’t be too shy- let’s face it, at least half of us are going to make a show of ourselves.
See you there!
In other news:
* We’d like to take this opportunity to remind everyone that our very own Campaigns Officer this year, Rebecca Murphy, is currently campaigning for Welfare Officer of the UCC Students’ Union. In addition to her proven organisational and people skills, Rebecca would be a strong LGBT voice in the union. (I hope my cheque is in the post Rebecca) The elections will be held on the 10th and 11th of March, and we encourage everyone to cast their vote this year.
* Also, we’re sending a sizeable delegation to the USI LGBT Standing Conference in Belfast this weekend. There, they’ll be involved in debating some key issues with relation to USI policy on LGBT-related topics. If you’d like further information on this, drop us a line.
We’re in the final stages of planning the remainder of the events of the year. We look forward to sharing the full programme with you shortly- but we’re determined to go out with a bang!

Hi all,
This week we’ve lined up a speaker, David Corby, to talk about mental health
amongst the LGBT population. This is a topic of particular relevance given
the Gay and Lesbian Equality Network’s (GLEN) recent publication of a report
dedicated to this very issue. It’s findings are fascinating- though many of
us will surely not be shocked at some of the facts and figures contained
within it.
The report is viewable online at
http://www.glen.ie/press/pdfs/Supporting%20LGBT%20Lives%20Report.pdf
David Corby’s talk tomorrow night begins at 8pm in Electrical Engineering
L2.
Looking forward to seeing you there.
Two other quick pieces of news:
For the girls- a representative from the Women’s Weekend lesbian event will
be attending tomorrow night’s talk to distribute leaflets on the event- more
information will be available on that tomorrow night.
For the guys- we’ve been asked to help participate in a study on
masculinity, lifestyle and personal well-being for a research team in
Trinity College Dublin. The link to the survey, which is entirely anonymous
and confidential, is here: http://tinyurl.com/bg2cya
We’re encouraging as many of our members to participate in the survey, the
results (again, entirely non-identifiable) of which will be posted on the
site as soon as the research is complete.

Consider this a primer for the flurry of mental-health related events we’re planning.
You know all those annoying Allstudents emails we all get begging us to fill out surveys for irritating, inconsequential and pointless undergraduate research projects? Well, this is nothing like that.
We’ve been asked by a research team in Trinity College Dublin (boo, hiss!) to give some assistance to their research project. It aims to examine men’s roles and well-being in Ireland today, through focus groups, interviews, and surveys. It’s the survey bit that they’re asking us for our help with. They want to survey all kinds of men (sorry girls) on their lifestyle and well-being, and they’re looking to get a sample of the LGBT population to fill out the survey. Which is where we come in. We’re encouraging as many society members to fill this out.
It’s largely a multiple-choice survey, and it’s entirely anonymous.
The survey is available online at http://tinyurl.com/bg2cya
Thanks!

Well, that’s technically a lie. We’ve no pennies. But we still want to know what you think. As we move into the final stretch for the society’s activities this year, we want to ask you:
-Any suggestions for events we can hold before the college year is out?
-Anything we’ve done well this year?
-And stuff we’ve fallen down on.
Use the form after the jump, and you can submit your replies entirely anonymously.
Remember, we exist to serve the LGBT community within UCC. If we’re not doing that, then we’re failing you! We’re open to any and all suggestions to make it better.

Tonight we’re getting involved in the Rag Week festivities by going to
Freakscene. It’s a 60s/80s themed night tonight, and Freakscene have been
kind enough to provide us with a limited number of free passes into the club
(which will be 7 euro without the pass) . Tonight we’ll also be meeting up
with our counterparts from the University of Limerick, so it will be a good
opportunity to meet some new people and have a good time. We’ll be meeting
at 7.45pm outside the Students’ Centre and heading into town for a few
drinks prior to Freaskcene, so you’d be very welcome to join us at any point
during the night.
We’d also like to let you know about a protest march taking place on
Valentine’s Day in Dublin, organised by LGBT Noise (www.lgbtnoise.ie). This
is part of the campaign to institute full civil marriage for gay and lesbian
people, and is a worthy campaign. Whilst we are not sending an official
delegation to Dublin for the protest, we do encourage anybody who is free to
go to Dublin to march. The Central Bank at 2pm is the place to meet for the
march.
Finally we in the UCC LGBT Society would like to extend our sincere
condolences to the family and friends of UCC student Kevan Malone who died
this week.

Now that we’ve let the dust settle on Rainbow Week, let’s recall the good times again!
A slideshow featuring just some of the week’s highlights can be seen here.
More photo albums showing pictures from a variety of events over the past year will be posted shortly. We’ll also be posting the video from the Zappone and Gilligan talk during Rainbow Week for those who missed it.
