Awards Winners- And Important Meeting Tonight
We’ll start with the good news. Last night at the Societies Guild STARS Awards, the LGBT Society took home the silverware for Best Social/Religious Society, as well as Best Poster. The competition in both categories was fierce, and we are very proud of our wins. We are also pleased to be nominated for the best PR award, and best Small Society. The announcement of the winners of these two awards will be made at next week’s Clubs & Socs Ball. Now, onto something more serious. The UCC Students’ Union have submitted a motion to USI Congress, which if passed, will result in the abolition of the LGBT Right Officer, which is currently a full time role within the USI. Neither the entire SU Executive, Welfare Working Group, Class Council, or the LGBT Society were consulted. This was a unilateral decision that, we believe, sets a dangerous precedent. It is also entirely undemocratic. The merits of the motion are not the focus of our difficulty with it- we, like the other aformentioned bodies, are quite ready to have a debate on the need for and the effectiveness of the LGBT Rights Officer. But what the SU have done here is dangerous and wrong. We are having a meeting tonight at 6pm to discuss what our response should be. This will take place in O’Rahily Building 244. All are welcome. Remember, this is not an LGBT issue, this is a democracy issue that all students can get behind. If you can’t get to the meeting but would like to let us know your thoughts, our email address is lgbt@uccsocieties.ie . Thank you.
