Archive for March, 2010
We will be polishing off this successful year with our last major event next
Wednesday, 24th! The event will begin at 7pm in the Tower Rooms 1 and 2
(those who don’t know where these rooms are can meet me outside the Student
Centre at 6:50pm) with a wine reception and a presentation from the Irish
Queer Archives.
Following this, we will move to the Aula Maxima at 8pm where we will be
presenting the finished book of our own LGBT Society’s History from prior to
its official recognition to the present day. The President of UCC, Dr.
Michael Murphy will be giving a speech at this event, as will founder of UCC
LGBT Society, Cathal Kerrigan and first Auditor, Josephine O’ Halloran.
Tonie Walsh from Irish Queer Archives will also be speaking on the night, as
will our very own Tiarnan O’ Sullivan, who was coordinator for our Archives
project this year.
Leaflets with a breakdown of the history will also be given to everyone in
attendance on the night. A lot of work has gone into this project over the
past few months and anybody who is interested in our society’s history our
the history of the LGBT movement in Ireland (or anybody who likes free wine)
would enjoy this event!
I hope to see many of you there and we will be heading out afterwards for
drinks. I would also like to thank those of you who contributed or helped us
out with this project over the last few months – it is very much
appreciated.
Laura.

Forwarded message from Cork Action for Equality:
Hey Folks,
As you are no doubt aware, the Civil Partnership bill is doing the rounds through the various stages in the Oireachtas and is scheduled to go before the Justice Committee on Thursday March 24th.
Cork Action For Equality urges everyone to write letters to the Justice Committee to express the shortcomings of the Civil Partnership Bill and it’s enshrinement of inequality into Irish law. We ask that you explain to the committee that Civil partnership does not go far enough and that it is discriminatory against LGBT people. You may also wish to highlight the short-comings of the bill such as the failure to recognise children in existing same-sex relationships and how LGBT homes are referred to as “shared home” rather than a family home.
Please write to Mr. Alan Guidon, clerk of the Justice Committee by March 18th (Thursday) outlining your views. To ensure that is reaches the justice committee in time, please post your letter by Tuesday 16th to:
Select Committee on Justice, Equality, Defence and Womens’ Rights
c/o Mr. Alan Guidon
Houses of the Oireachtas
Leinster House
Kildare Street
Dublin 2
Remember that a letter is much more effective than an e-mail as it adds a personal touch! With this in mind, Cork Action For Equality will be hosting an letter writing evening at:
Other Place,
South Main St,
7pm
14th of March (Tomorrow).
Then we’re off to Rubys for a bit o’ socialising. We’ll supply the paper, envelopes and pens. All we ask is that you bring yourself, any family or friends and the price of a stamp (55c).
