UCC Trans Symposioum

Dear Members,

I hope everyone is staying calm with their exams.

Please read below a forwarded message on the upcoming Trans symposium that will be on in UCC in May.

I will be attending, so if you are free, I hope to see you there. If not, good luck with exams!

A chara,

I am writing to inform you of a forthcoming symposium we are organising at University College Cork in May 2010.

The theme of the symposium is *Towards a Gender Recognition Framework for Ireland*. The Renewed Programme for Government, agreed in October 2009, includes a commitment to introduce gender recognition legislation in Irish law under the ‘Equality’ heading. The purpose of this half-day symposium is to contribute to the debate leading to the drafting of such legislation. In particular, we hope to learn from the experience of the drafting of the *Gender Recognition Act, 2004* in the UK and to highlight the human rights issues which require consideration in the drafting process.

We thought that this symposium might be of interest to some in your organisation, and so would be most grateful if you could draw the symposium to the attention of your membership.

The symposium forms part of an Irish Research Council for the Humanities and Social Sciences thematic project, on Gender Equality, Religious Diversity and Multiculturalism in Contemporary Ireland. Further details of the project

are available online at: http://www.ucc.ie/en/lawsite/staff/smullally/IRCHSSthematicproject/#d.en.71573

Further details about the symposium, and a booking form, are available online at: http://www.ucc.ie/en/ccjhr/fullstory,97981,en.html

We hope to welcome some of you there on the day.

Le meas,
Tanya

Good Luck to everyone with exams!
