About Us
Info about the society;
UCC LGBT is the lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender societiy in University College Cork. We provide a safe space for all members of the LGBT community and run social events throughout the year. We also run political campaigns on issues pertinent to LGBT students to raise awareness amongst the general population of the college about LGBT issues.
History of the Society and yearly events
Timeline:
1st July 1980: Cathal Kerrigan begins term as General Secretary of Students Union
7th Nov 1980: Cathal attends inaugural Grads Ball with his lover Mairtin
29th Nov 1980: Philosoph debate: “that this house supports the establishment of a college gaysoc by the students union”- gaysoc founded immediately after the debate
Jan 1981: joint board rejects application for recognition
Feb 1988: SU president and rights officer help revival
Oct 1988: Re-convened gay soc decides to campaign for recognition
Feb 1989: clubs and societies guild vote 9-1 in favour of recognition
Mar 1989: SU exec votes unanimously to support application
Mar 1989: Joint board votes 4-2 in favour of recognition
Apr 1989: Academic council votes 27-7 in favour of recognition
Apr 1989: governing body in UCC votes 13-7 in favour of recognition
