Campaigns

A Message from Our Campaigns and Human Rights Officer:

Hi, my name is Laura and I’m responsible for conducting the campaigns of our LGBT Society for 2010/2011. My aim this year is to revitalise the role of Campaigns Officer in our LGBT Society and work hard to carry out effective campaigns throughout the year. The primary campaigning areas which we have decided to focus on this year include:

an LGBT Peer Education Campaign in UCC,

a campaign to highlight the need for Marriage Equality for same-sex couples in Ireland,

a Combatting LGBT Stereotypes campaign,

a campaign against the IBTS MSM Blood Ban,

an Anti-Homophobia/Bi Phobia/Transphobia campaign

and a campaign to highlight and increase awareness of LGBT Sexual and Mental Health issues.

In addition to this, I will also be organising our annual Human Rights Award, whereby we select a person or persons from Ireland whom we feel deserve recognition for their work in the field of human rights, particularly the human rights of LGBT people.

Last year I served as Membership Development Officer in the Society (now renamed Members’ Officer). In this role, I acted as a support for our new and existing members and revived and headed our Buddy System Campaign which was nominated for Best Campaign at the STARS Awards in UCC last year. Working in this role gave me a lot of insight into the problems and obstacles faced by LGBT students and propelled me to run for Campaigns Officer in order to be able to take a more proactive approach in improving these matters.
